Point, Line, Plane, Solid: Geometry as the ABC of God's Creative Word
Join us for a day of exploration and explanation into the wonderful and curious world of Sacred Geometry!
The idea that Geometry and Number stand behind the structures and forms found throughout Nature, is the primary teaching of The Mathemagical School of Art, Design and Natural Phenomena. The goal of this workshop is to explore the fundamental numbers and qualities that make up the foundation of our Universe. By looking at One, Two, Three, and Four, and their corresponding shapes, we see the genesis of creation unfolding into atoms, molecular structures, mineral compounds and crystals.
We will use compass and staight-edge to draw the basic geometries that govern the building of a universe. Following that, we will work with three-dimensional models to understand how the Platonic Solids are the primary units which matter manifests through.
No previous art or mathematical experience is necessary, we'll take care of that! By the end of the day, you will have completed four geometrical drawings, and have the confidence to go home and use your new skills to produce an array of beautiful designs. You will also leave with the knowledge and materials to further pursue and construct three-dimensional forms. The Platonic Solids, as, well as their cousins: the Archemedian Solids. While some of the lecture will cover numbers and arithmetic, as the language in which they talk amongst each other, it will be relativly light, and will hopefully give you a new appreciation for numbers and mathematics!
Students : please bring a compass, a ruler, 11x14” drawing pad, pencils (lead and color if possible), and an open mind! We will provide handouts and a booklist.
The Golden Section and The Pentagram
The Golden Section and The Pentagram: Stars, Spirals and the Net of Life.
In this full day workshop, we pick up with where we left off in Point, Line, Plane, Solid. The number Five and it's geometric manifestations, the Pentagon and Pentagram, unlock Nature's Door, and reveal the mathematical code behind the "Golden Spiral." Through a series of drawings using the compass and the straight edge, we will explore the way in which the numbers found in the Fibonacci Sequence lay down the structure for Life to manifest!
The primary drawing, the construction of a Pentagram, is more difficult than those of the previous class, and therefore more exciting and rewarding. Besides drawing we will further our exploration in 3-D geometry, as well as discuss the philosophical nature of this most mysterious number.
Students interested in this class are required to have attended the previous workshop, although exceptions may be made for those with advanced training in geometry and compass-use.

The Lesser Is To The Greater
...And Other Beautiful Proportions.
This is the third and final class in the series, and is meant to give the artist and designer practical knowledge of how to create pleasing proportions in his or her artwork. Exploring the diagonals of the Square, the Triangle and the Pentagon, we find Square Roots of 2, 3 and 5, respectively. These numbers are the key to Nature's ability to expand constructively and indefinitely. When taken as lengths in a relationship to 1 (Unity), we find that we can build rectangles with very balanced and attractive proportions. The class will focus more than the previous classes on drawing, revealing the technique of how to layout proportional grids for paintings, though some time will be spent looking at ratios in nature and art history. Students interested in this class are required to have attended the previous two workshops, although exceptions may be made for those with advanced training in geometry and compass-use.
